What is Conversational IVR?
Conversational IVR replaces keypad menus with open speech: callers say what they need in their own words and an AI understands, routes or resolves the request, without navigating a tree of options.
Also known as: voice IVR, natural-language IVR, AI IVR
How it differs from classic IVR
Classic IVR asks 'press 1 for billing'. Conversational IVR asks 'how can I help?' and interprets the answer. It understands intent from a full sentence, can ask a follow-up if the request is unclear, and can complete simple tasks itself such as checking an order status or booking a slot.
Where the lines blur
In practice, a conversational IVR that can take actions and handle open dialogue is a voice agent. The label 'IVR' is often kept because buyers search for it and because the product still sits in the call-routing position, deciding where each call should go before a human is involved.
Common mistake
Turning it on without a tested escalation path. Open speech invites unexpected requests. Decide in advance which intents the system resolves, which it routes, and what a caller hears when it does not understand twice in a row.
