What is AI Voice Agent?
An AI voice agent is software that holds a spoken phone conversation in real time: it listens, understands intent, decides what to do, takes actions in connected systems, and replies in a natural synthetic voice.
Also known as: voice agent, AI phone agent, voice bot
How it works
Most production voice agents chain four stages on every turn: speech-to-text converts the caller's audio into words, a language model decides what to say or do, tools and integrations execute actions such as booking a slot or updating a lead, and text-to-speech turns the reply into audio. Streaming each stage, rather than waiting for the previous one to finish, is what keeps the pause between turns short enough to feel like conversation.
Why it matters for buyers
The difference from a legacy phone bot is autonomy. A keypad menu can only route; a voice agent can complete a task end to end, such as confirming an order or qualifying a lead, and hand the call to a person when it should. That makes it a replacement for repetitive call-handling work, not just a nicer front door.
Example
A clinic's voice agent answers at 8 pm, asks which doctor the caller wants, checks the connected calendar, offers two open slots, books one and sends a confirmation. If the caller describes urgent symptoms, it transfers to the on-call staff instead of improvising.
