What is Voice AI?

Voice AI is the umbrella term for technologies that let machines understand and produce human speech: speech recognition, language understanding, speech synthesis and analytics on audio. AI voice agents are one product built from it.

Also known as: speech AI, AI voice technology

What it includes

Voice AI is a stack, not a single product. The listening layer is automatic speech recognition. The thinking layer is a language model plus business logic. The speaking layer is text-to-speech. Around those sit telephony, which carries the audio, and analytics, which turns finished calls into searchable data. Vendors differ in which layers they own and which they rent from others.

Voice AI versus AI voice agent

People use the two phrases interchangeably, but they sit at different levels. Voice AI is the technology category; an AI voice agent is a finished application that uses it to run a conversation. A transcription tool and a call-scoring tool are also voice AI, yet neither talks to a caller.

Common mistake

Buyers compare vendors on voice quality alone. Voice is the most visible layer, but call outcomes are usually decided by the unglamorous ones: how well recognition handles your callers' accents and phone-line noise, how quickly turns are taken, and how reliably the agent completes the action behind the conversation.
