What is Conversational AI?

Conversational AI is technology that carries on multi-turn dialogue with people in natural language, by text or voice, tracking context across turns instead of matching single keywords or menu choices.

Also known as: dialogue AI

How it differs from a scripted bot

A scripted bot follows a decision tree: if the user says X, show Y. Conversational AI keeps a running understanding of the dialogue, so a caller can say 'make it Thursday instead' and the system knows what 'it' refers to. Modern systems rely on large language models for this, constrained by business rules and approved knowledge so they stay on task.

Voice is the harder channel

The same engine can power chat and phone, but voice adds problems chat never has: recognition errors, background noise, people talking over the agent, and a tolerance for silence measured in fractions of a second. A chatbot that is acceptable in a web widget can feel broken on a call.

Example

In chat, a customer types 'where is my order?'. On a call, the same customer says 'haan woh mera order abhi tak nahi aaya'. Both reach the same order lookup, but the voice path must first cope with mixed-language speech and decide when the caller has finished talking.

Where this shows up at Vaami

Vaami applies conversational AI to phone calls specifically, which is why its engineering focus is latency, interruption handling and Indian-language speech.
