What is Intent Recognition (AI Intent)?
Intent recognition is the step where AI works out what a caller or customer wants, such as booking, cancelling or asking about an order, from their own words, so a voice agent or chatbot can respond or route correctly.
Also known as: AI intent, intent detection, intent classification
How it works
Older systems matched what the caller said against a fixed list of intents trained on example phrases, with a confidence score and a fallback when the score was low. Modern voice agents use large language models that read the whole conversation, so they cope with requests phrased in unexpected ways, several requests in one sentence and mid-sentence changes of mind.
Either way, the recognized intent decides what happens next: answer a question, book an appointment, look up a record or transfer to a person.
Intent versus entities
The intent is the goal, for example rescheduling an appointment. Entities are the details needed to complete it, such as the date, the location and the customer's name. A good agent asks only for the entities still missing instead of running every caller through the same script.
Why it matters for analytics
Tagging every call with its intent shows why people call: which reasons drive volume, which end in a transfer and which could be automated next. It is one of the core outputs of voice intelligence and speech analytics.
Where this shows up at Vaami
Vaami's voice agents recognize intent live during calls, and Vaami Voice Intelligence tags intent across every call for analytics.
