What is Hinglish?

Hinglish is the informal blend of Hindi and English that millions of Indians speak and write, switching languages mid-sentence. It is a distinct target for voice AI, not just Hindi with some English words.

Also known as: Hindi-English mix

What makes it distinct

Hinglish is not a fixed standard. Speakers pick English for technical or modern nouns ('account', 'appointment', 'delivery') and Hindi for grammar and feeling, and the balance shifts by region, age and context. There is also no single spelling when it is written in Roman script, so the same word may appear several ways in text, which complicates transcripts and search.

Why it matters for voice agents

A Hindi-only agent stumbles on the English nouns; an English-only agent misses the Hindi grammar. Callers also expect the agent to answer in kind. Replying in formal Hindi to a casual Hinglish question sounds stiff, and replying in pure English can feel like a downgrade in warmth. The agent's script and voice both need to land in the same register.

Example

'Kal subah ka appointment reschedule kar do, evening mein koi slot hai?' contains Hindi time words, English nouns and a Hindi verb phrase. A good agent extracts the intent (reschedule), the old slot (tomorrow morning) and the new preference (evening) without asking the caller to repeat in one language.
