What is SIP Trunking?

SIP trunking carries phone calls over the internet between a telephony provider and your systems using the Session Initiation Protocol. It is how a voice AI platform connects to the public phone network.

Also known as: SIP trunk, Session Initiation Protocol trunk

How it works

A SIP trunk is a virtual bundle of call channels between a carrier and your platform. The carrier hands a call to your system as a SIP session carrying audio; your system answers or dials out through it. It replaces physical phone lines and scales by adding channels, not hardware.

Why it matters for voice agents

The trunk sets the floor for audio quality, call setup time and concurrency. A voice agent with excellent models still sounds poor on a congested or distant route. Where the carrier's media servers sit relative to the AI platform also adds to end-to-end latency, so route geography matters more than buyers expect.

Common mistake

Ignoring channel limits. A trunk with 30 channels supports 30 simultaneous calls. An outbound campaign sized for a thousand contacts will queue or fail if concurrency is not matched to the trunk, and the failure shows up as unexplained unanswered calls.

Where this shows up at Vaami

Vaami supports SIP trunking and PSTN integration, and can work with an existing phone system through call forwarding.
