What is Call Transcription?
Call transcription converts the audio of a phone call into written text using speech-to-text, usually with speaker labels and timestamps, so calls can be searched, reviewed, summarized and analyzed.
Also known as: phone call transcription, call-to-text, conversation transcription
How it works
Speech-to-text models process the call audio, either live during the call or after it ends. Separating the speakers (diarization) and adding timestamps make the transcript usable. Accuracy is usually measured as word error rate and depends on audio quality, accents, background noise and domain vocabulary such as product names.
What teams use transcripts for
Quality assurance and coaching, compliance review, call summaries written back to the CRM, search across past calls, and analytics such as sentiment and intent. For an AI voice agent, the live transcript is also what the agent reasons over during the call.
Consent and retention
Rules on recording and transcribing calls differ by country and, in some places, by state. Tell callers when calls are recorded where required, keep transcripts only as long as you need them and restrict who can access them.
