What is DLT Registration?
DLT registration is the process in which a business registers its entity, sender IDs (headers) and content templates on a telecom operator's distributed ledger platform, as TRAI requires for commercial calls and messages in India.
Also known as: Distributed Ledger Technology registration, TRAI DLT, sender ID registration
How it works
Under TRAI's framework, a business that sends commercial communication registers as a principal entity on a DLT portal run by a telecom operator. It then registers its headers (the sender identity) and its content templates. Telecom operators check traffic against those records, and communication that does not match can be blocked. Registration is made once at the entity level and is separate from any vendor you use to send.
What it means for voice agents
Outbound AI calling for commercial purposes falls into the same regime as other commercial communication, so the calling business is the one that registers. A voice platform can support the technical side, such as using registered headers and scrubbing lists, but it cannot register on the business's behalf as if it were the business.
Common mistake
Registering a template that is more generic than the actual message. Templates are matched against the real content, so a script that drifts from what was registered can be rejected. Keep the registered purpose and the spoken script aligned, and register separate templates for separate use cases.
