What is DND Registry (NCPR)?

The DND registry is India's national list of customers who have opted out of unsolicited commercial calls and messages, either entirely or by category. Telemarketers must scrub their lists against it.

Also known as: Do Not Disturb registry, National Customer Preference Register, NDNC

How it works

Customers register their number's preference with their operator: block all commercial communication, or allow selected categories. Operators maintain this as the National Customer Preference Register. A business or telemarketer is expected to check each number against the register before a promotional call, and to skip numbers that have opted out of that category.

Which calls it covers

The register is aimed at unsolicited commercial communication, mainly promotional. Service and transactional messages that a customer has an existing relationship for are treated differently under the TRAI framework, but the line depends on content and consent, so classification should be reviewed with a legal adviser rather than assumed.

Common mistake

Scrubbing once and reusing the list for months. Preferences change daily. Scrub close to the time of each campaign, and keep the scrub date in your campaign records so you can show it later.
