What is TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India)?
TRAI is India's statutory telecom regulator. For voice AI buyers it matters because TRAI's regulations govern commercial calls and messages, including registration, consent preferences, number series and penalties for misuse.
Also known as: Telecom Regulatory Authority of India
What TRAI does
TRAI was set up under the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India Act, 1997, and issues regulations and directions to telecom service providers. On commercial communication, its central instrument is the Telecom Commercial Communications Customer Preference Regulations (TCCCPR), which sets rules for registration, customer preferences and complaints about unsolicited commercial communication.
How it reaches your calls
TRAI regulates telecom operators, and operators enforce its rules on traffic that crosses their networks. A business usually meets TRAI through its operator: registration requirements, blocked or flagged numbers, and action against senders of unsolicited promotional calls. TRAI has tightened these rules in recent years, including 2025 amendments aimed at curbing spam, so check current directions before launching a campaign.
Common mistake
Reading a vendor's blog post as the rule. Regulations change by direction and amendment. Before running outbound calling, confirm the current requirement on TRAI's site or with a telecom lawyer, and keep a record of which version you complied with and when.
